People hate the Kindle until they play with a bit then realize, its damn ugly but it does its job and well. The design doesn't take away from the book which is a big deal to me. I think if Apple designed it, for example, they'd try to put their typical shininess all over it which wouldn't fade away while you're reading as well as the Kindle's design does.
