Which OS are You?

I’m sitting here installing Edubuntu as I type. I didn’t realize just how old this Presario is. 8.0 GB hard drive my friends. I’m going to assume the processor is a PII as another of my older machines is a 5100 series with a PII. It’s taking forever to install but I’m not surprised, given those specs. While I wait for the install to finish (Building LTSP chroot 50%) I shall blog. The DS Lite got released today and I. <strike>Want.</strike> Need. One. I went to Worst Buy yesterday to kill time and there was a Blue Shirt holding one for people to try out. Of course it had SMB on it and of course I stood there for 15 minutes looking so out of place as I played. 25 (almost 26 *shudder*) year old black chicks aren’t necessarily Nintendo’s target demographic. I won’t let a thing like demographics deter me, thank you very much. I want my DS Lite con Mario and <veruca>I want it NOOOOOW. </veruca>

Install is moving forward (Installing Packages) and I really should be timing this. I know it has been at least an hour since I started. Ah well, more time to drink Parrot Bay and OJ and continue blogging.

I bring more good news from the Linux front…Qunu.com. For some background, if you weren’t already aware, a major “problem” with getting people to switch to Linux is lack of support. Qunu attempts to address that problem by bridging the gap between experts and new users. Wow, I sound like a press release. Anyhow, here’s hoping the idea and the site takes off and proves to be a useful tool for a long time to come.

Ah installation has finished with a lovely disk space error. Methinks I will install again and not accept the default formatting scheme. Back to the drawing board!

Good Thursday people! I can’t believe it’s Thursday already, it feels very much like a Tuesday. As it stands, I am up at 6:39 am and have been up since 5:30 am. I don’t know what’s up with that since I normally don’t rise until 7 ish. Weird.

Moving along, my Memorial Day Weekend was pretty nice. I rented a car and drove up to pick up my sister and nephews and head to a wedding (congratulations Jay and Brittina!). My oldest nephew, Kevonnie, was the ring bearer in the wedding and he was way too cute…feast your eyes on the cuteness.

I brought along my MBP for the trip and my nephews were so engrossed in it. Every time I opened it, they wanted to touch _something_. This can be nothing but a young interest in computing so I’m working on getting them a computer of their own. Mind you they don’t have one in the home so they need the exposure anyhow.

I have an old Compaq Presario that I’m going to reconfigure for my nephews use. As I don’t want to put any flavor of Windows on the computer, I was looking around from some educational/kid oriented flavors of linux. Surprisingly, a search for Linux for Kids yielded bad (out of date) results. Asking around proved to be a better source of information and I was pointed to edubuntu. Mind you, I’d never heard of edubuntu before. Yes I’ve been living under a rock apparently but now that I have been enlightened? Hello, jackpot!

Edubuntu is geared towards use in schools but works in the home environment too apparently. The first screenshots I saw of some of the programs are exactly what I’m looking for; a fun, educational, introduction to computers. I’ve not installed it yet but I soon will. [Note to self: purchase KVM.] I’ll try to update later on with my experiences.

Whew so this post is way long but I have one more thing! I got my Valleyschwag yesterday! Woot! <strike>I’ll take a picture as soon as possible but for now</strike> I used my iSight to take a picture, here’s a listing of the contents:

womens Typepad t-shirt (XL)

womens rubyred labs t-shirt (XL)

2 minty buttons

A nice haul I’d say. Shockingly, the womens shirts fit! Thanks for thinking of us more endowed women, schwag creators and Valleyschwag.

Original digg:

Paul Thurnott, who is usually excited about all things Microsoft seems very dissapointed with Windows Vista. Here is the conlusion of his review of the latest CTP. He still gives it 5 pauls though.

So I guess I’m not the only one who isn’t so thrilled with Windows Vista. Honestly, I really am not expecting much from this release and its quite likely I won’t bother to upgrade.

Speaking of operating systems, I read an article yesterday that deals with the barriers people encounter in switching to Linux. This got me to thinking, why is there not a movement for switching to Linux, similar to the one like there is for Firefox? So I check Godaddy to see if getlinux.com is available. Sadly, no. However, when navigating to http://www.getlinux.com, there is nothing to be found. So I check out the registration for the domain and this is what I get:

(I edited out some of the address details because maybe Andrew doesn’t want his info posted all over the internet.)

Googling Andrew Busey returns http://www.pluck.com/company/team.html as the first result. A little research shows that yes, this is the same Andrew Busey. I’m not going to walk through all the steps, an enterprising internet user such as yourself should be able to do the same thing I did. Meanwhile, here’s hoping Mr. Busey has some sort of purpose for this gem of a domain name rather than just squatting on it.

Speaking of Googling names, I wonder how many other Erica Baker’s there are out there. Of course there is the Erica Baker who has been missing since February 7, 1999. Then there is the Erica Baker in California that works in advertising. She tells me that there is another Erica Baker in LA who works in advertising as well. I think I’m going to start an Erica-roll. If any Erica Baker’s out there have webpages you’d like me to link to, leave a comment and I’ll add it.

I think that will do for today’s babbling.
