The “vacation” is over. After 2 weeks at the parents house in Yuba City, I have now moved into my place in Sunnyvale. The next three days will be lots of grueling work in making my apartment “home.”

First thing I need to do is stop writing this blog post and walk myself to Home Depot (I have no car plus its only a half mile away) to get something to kill the insects in this place. There are at least 3 kinds of spiders and some kind of small brown thing that I can’t identify. This does not please me and they all need to be vanquished before I can begin putting my furniture together.

Oh the furniture. I love Ikea, I really do, but I hate putting their stuff together. I may be alone in this but I prefer instructions with words that accompany the pictures. Somehow reading “put this thing into that thing then tighten the screws after everything is all done” works better for me than one picture with a couple arrows indicating motion. Luckily when I’ve decided something needs to be done, I’m very tenacious about it. I’ve decided that my apartment will be “done” by the end of this weekend so come hell or high water, it will be. If its not, well, the Astronaut will be here on Friday and he can put the rest of this crap together. (Only partially kidding here.)

Speaking of the Astronaut visiting, this will be his first time coming to California, ever. Pressure much? I barely know this area but I will attempt to show him a good time. One of the things that I’m definitely doing is taking him to the Sierra Nevada Brewery in Chico. I told the parents we’d stop by so they could meet him (this terrifies me in many ways) so we’ll hang out in Yuba for a bit then head up. Outside of that, I’m at a loss for what to do while he’s here. I know we’re going to see Tropic Thunder and do the obligatory tour of the workplace but *shrug* after that. I suck at planning these sorts of things. The Astronaut is lucky in that he has a really close knit group of friends to help him plan for my visits. His best friend (the Admiral) has even suggested we go watch horses run around in circles for my next visit. Joy!

Since it is now 9 am, its probably best I get this day started. Stay tuned for the pics of the completed apartment.

Yichao has made a nice GUI interface for the WordPress to Blogger tool I previously posted about. The best part is that it allows for selection of what posts to import. Hooray!

For those of you who read my site via feed only, this is just a heads up that I’ll be finishing up the import of some of my old posts. I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you that all the posts here and especially the ones I’m importing are my thoughts, ideas, and opinions and not those of my employer. I’d like to also say that yes, I too went through my punctuation and capitalization optional phase. It’s since passed (obviously) and we can all move on. Finally the majority of the imported posts are highly personal. If you don’t read my blog to read about me then you may get a bit bored.

Update: Migration complete! I’ve also moved my blog from http://www.ericabaker.com to http://blog.ericabaker.com. Bye bye PageRank.

So as I mentioned in a previous post, I am trying to import my old blog entries from WordPress to Blogger. I did a test run to see how the script behaves. Some caveats I’ve found thus far:

No control over what gets imported. If you import things that are in draft status in WordPress, they will be in published status in Blogger. However, control over what to import is being worked on.

The script uses XMLRPC which means if you have characters in your posts that XML can’t parse, it will throw errors.

Even though the posts are imported correctly in the blog, they still show up at the top of the feed. This isn’t a fault of the the script, nor is it a big deal, its just kind of annoying. (Note to AG: I’m not even about to touch Vista again, that was an old post.)

I’ve held off on the full import until controls are inserted for what posts get moved. I’m not a fan of my old ramblings in draft status being added to this blog. You probably wouldn’t want to read them anyhow.

Since I’ve moved to New York, I haven’t traveled *anywhere* which is a big change from the amount of traveling I used to do when I lived in Atlanta. While I like visiting new (to me) locales, it’s nice to be in one place for a while. That’s about to change as I’m headed to Italy in the not so distant future. It will be my first time in Europe since I was 2 or 3 years old and I’m really excited about it. I’ll be in Italy long enough to visit some other countries so I’d like to hear where you 78 readers (growth!) think I should go. My main interests are taking cool pictures and visiting historical sites but I’d like to do a wee bit of shopping while I’m there as well. Of course I’ll be sampling the food and hopefully scoring some good bottles of wine to take home.

Last but not least, I’ve been thinking of changing the template of this blog. I’m not sure whether I want to change a few colors here and there or just overhaul the whole thing. If you notice template weirdness that’s a good indicator that I’m tinkering with it. I’m also trying some new things with the feed. If you find any of the changes annoying, sorryforya! I kid, I kid. If you find something annoying by all means let me know and I’ll see what I can do.
