Tumblogs are all the rage right now but sometimes a big long post is warranted. For those occasions a lot of us keep “old school” blogs around. For me, it was hard to integrate my tumblog and my “real” blog. I settled for having a link between the two separate entities and having a customized tumblr domain. The release of Tumblr 3.0 added the option to embed posts anywhere, so I gave up the crappy linking between blogs and embedded my tumblog into a WordPress page. I’m sure others have done this but I’m documenting how I did it in the hopes it will help someone else.

All in all, embedding my tumblog into WP was pretty easy. Here’s what I did:

Create a file called tumblr.css and put it somewhere.

Create a new Page in WordPress.

Switch to the code editor of the page and insert the following:

<style type=”text/css”> @import url(http://www.pathtoyourtumblrcssfile.com/tumblr.css); </style> <script src=”http://pathtoyourtumblog.com/js” type=”text/javascript”></script>

Make sure you edit the paths in the code snippet before publishing.

Save the page

Edit the CSS to your liking.

That’s it. The trickiest part of the whole deal is editing the CSS. Tumblr doesn’t have documentation for the various classes you can use to style the js so you have to fly by the seat of your pants a bit. For convenience and the sake of having this written down somewhere, here are all the classes used:

tumblr_body
tumblr_description
tumblr_post
tumblr_quote_post
tumblr_quote
tumblr_open_quote
tumblr_close_quote
tumblr_source
tumblr_photo_post
tumblr_photo
tumblr_caption
tumblr_link_post
tumblr_link
tumblr_chat_post
tumblr_label
tumblr_text_post
tumblr_title
tumblr_body
tumblr_video_post
tumblr_video
tumblr_audio_post

If you’d like a css file to get you started, here’s a modified version of the one I use: http://usefultreats.googlepages.com/tumblr.css

I’ve fallen in love with tumblr.

There I said it. I can admit it. Me and twitter still have a thing going but my heart belongs to tumblr right now.

I’m sure I’m in the stone ages on the late meter but I just discovered tumblr about a week ago thanks to a coworker. It’s really very simple and was something I was trying to do myself not too long ago. Silly me, I should learn to leave this sort of thing to the web professionals. They will get it right, as tumblr has.

Okay so if you’re in the stone ages like me, you’re thinking “What exactly is tumblr?” Imagine blogging and scrapbooking got really drunk one night and had a “Knocked Up” experience. tumblr would be their love (or not) child.

First: I can point all my RSS feeds at it and it will post things, in their proper order, without me having to do much. Goodbye Yahoo Pipes, I barely knew ye.

Second: Built in support for Blogger, YouTube, Flickr, Digg, del.icio.us, Twitter, Last.fm, WordPress, Vox, and LiveJournal. You see what they did there? They said “Erica, you know you want this, come and get it, it won’t hurt a bit. Look, we’re easy.” Their siren song is so beautiful, you really can’t resist it.

Third: They thought about those one off things you find on the web that you’d like to share but you don’t feel like making a whole blog post about. Like quotes, images, and text snippets. Can’t forget about the conversation support, for those times when your friend calls you a Google whore in no uncertain terms.

Yeah, so you’ve read and you’re thinking tumblr sounds better than chocolate. Ok, its not that good, but so far, it sounds damn good right? Right. It gets better though.

Your tumblr page is fully customizable. CSS, HTML, and all. They already have support for custom domains (http://tumblr.ericabaker.com holla!) or you can stick with yourmom.tumblr.com. Mobile posting is another thing they already have support for, as well as mobile browsing. Add in the bookmarklet for quick posting of stuff found on the web and a widget for the Apple dashboard and we are approaching chocolate level awesomeness. All free.

My one and only concern about tumblr is that it will get a bunch of users and begin to be slow and a pain to use around peak hours. Hopefully they are built to scale and are prepared for that sort of thing. Right now, its pretty fast, which is good.

Meanwhile, its time for me to get ready for work. Happy Fathers Day in advance to all the dads out there.
