I did a test run to see how the script behaves. Some caveats I've found thus far:

No control over what gets imported. If you import things that are in draft status in Wordpress, they will be in published status in Blogger. However, control over what to import is being worked on.

The script uses XMLRPC which means if you have characters in your posts that XML can't parse, it will throw errors.

Even though the posts are imported correctly in the blog, they still show up at the top of the feed. This isn't a fault of the the script, nor is it a big deal, its just kind of annoying. (Note to AG: I'm not even about to touch Vista again, that was an old post.)

I've held off on the full import until controls are inserted for what posts get moved. I'm not a fan of my old ramblings in draft status being added to this blog. You probably wouldn't want to read them anyhow. ;)

Since I've moved to New York, I haven't traveled *anywhere* which is a big change from the amount of traveling I used to do when I lived in Atlanta. While I like visiting new (to me) locales, it's nice to be in one place for a while. That's about to change as I'm headed to Italy in the not so distant future. It will be my first time in Europe since I was 2 or 3 years old and I'm really excited about it. I'll be in Italy long enough to visit some other countries so I'd like to hear where you 78 readers (growth!) think I should go. My main interests are taking cool pictures and visiting historical sites but I'd like to do a wee bit of shopping while I'm there as well. Of course I'll be sampling the food and hopefully scoring some good bottles of wine to take home.

Last but not least, I've been thinking of changing the template of this blog. I'm not sure whether I want to change a few colors here and there or just overhaul the whole thing. If you notice template weirdness that's a good indicator that I'm tinkering with it. I'm also trying some new things with the feed. If you find any of the changes annoying, sorryforya! I kid, I kid. If you find something annoying by all means let me know and I'll see what I can do. :)

Migration Pattern

So contrary to the date of the first entry of this blog, I am not a total n00b blogger. To be truthful, I started this blog on Blogger back when I thought I might have a chance to work @ Google. It's wise to know the products of the company you're interviewing with and all. Before that, I'd been using WordPress and before that Movable Type and before that Xanga and before that greymatter. It stands to reason that if I'm on my fifth blogging platform, I'd have entries going back before March of 2006, right? Well unfortunately Blogger doesn't provide a way to import old entries from other platforms, so my entries back to September 2003 are locked away in WordPress land.

Enter Yichao Zhang who created a WordPress to Blogger importer. I'd been waiting for some enterprising person to use the Blogger API to create an importer. Truth be told, this post started out in December as a request for someone to do so. So, I'm going to try this out. If all is successful, you should see old posts appearing in the archives soon-ish.

Moving on, I would like to know when and how VOSS became the "it" water. I started seeing it in hotel rooms I went to and couldn't comprehend how a bottle of water could cost $8. Now I see pictures of Lindsay Lohan walking around carrying the stuff and I wonder where this stuff came from. I've never seen commercials for it so has it become popular by the design of its bottle (which is cool, I admit) and its placing in hotels?

confused people everywheeeerre....

RadicalRuss posted this on the Daily Kos: Shoot someone? I was noticably displeased when I fired up Yahoo and alas you can't see the people on your buddy list. Well today I was happy to see that the Messenger version was out of Beta and I had hoped that the stable version would play in Vista. Wrong. I plug it in to my Macbook Pro and there's iTunes, as expected. Then up pops the iPod registration screen in iTunes. I'm not normally the registering type but I figure, why not? So I plug in my info and press the Continue button and am presented with the following:

If you can't read that red text (click the image to see it full size), it says "This person record requires harvesting." If you've seen/heard/read War of the Worlds, perhaps you too would pause at that message.

Um, Apple? You're scaring me a little bit.

Update: I found out why I was getting this message. Apparently my account information was incomplete and Apple needed a little bit more data. It would be better if the message said "Please visit Apple.com and update your account," instead of creeping me out with a message about harvesting.

Edit: Had to fix the image link.

Too awesome for words

Briefs

This will be brief because I'm on a shoddy connection (VZW Broadband cards suck in Brooklyn).

So the iPhone == iMustHave. That's all that needs to be said about that.

New York is extremely different. I found myself trading a "preferred neighborhood" (read: gentrified) for apartment size, proximity to the train, and a washer/dryer in. my. apartment. You don't understand. The washer/dryer is like apartment gold in NY.

Not having a car can be a pain. Thank goodness for Zipcar. Tomorrow I shall make my grand shopping trip, not to make another for a number of months. I only wanted to get things for my apartment. Instead, due to zip code favoritism, I have to go buy my groceries since Fresh Direct won't deliver them to me. Shame on you Fresh Direct.

With my move to New York almost complete, I feel like I can share the tools that I couldn't have made this move without. Here they are, in some semblance of order:

Google Reader + Craigslist Apartment Listing + Backpage

Customize your search on CL and Backpage to fit your needs. Add those feeds to Google Reader to make one big list of apartments you can easily peruse. Peruse religiously. Add feeds you may find from other places. Continue to do this until you've found a few apartments that look promising.

village voice > Neighborhoods

Once you've found the few promising apartments, figure out what neighborhood they're in and read about the neighborhoods. You really want to do this to avoid getting a nice place in a not so nice neighborhood (unless you like to live on the wild side).

onNYTurf: NYC Subway Google Map Hack

Map the places you've found to check their proximity to a subway station. This is KEY. Nobody wants to walk a mile in the rain just to catch the train.

Precinct Crime Statistics

Again, you only need to check this if you care about such things.

Kayak.com

Once you've found a good looking place and insured its not in BFE (unless you want it to be, but why?) you need to go see it in person. Use Kayak to find a cheap plane ticket and almost reasonably priced hotel room (seriously it's New York, all of them are going to be overpriced).

HopStop.com

The best way to find your way around the city. You put in Point A and Point B and it finds the best route between the two. I think it's better to go apartment hunting via train because you get a better sense of what your commutes are going to be like if you move in to the place you're looking at.

Moving to New York from the Wired New York Forum

Nothing beats talking to someone from New York to get the scoop on New York. Ask questions here. They're relatively friendly.

Okay so I lied, this wasn't brief at all. I thoroughly intended it to be though and it's the thought that counts right?

To those who bleed orange

A little late but...

CONGRATS!!

to my former Orange Blooded brethren! Loyal 26 readers, this is a once in a blue moon thing, promise. On with the list...

Up until I was about 15 (1995), I always thought I'd be a lawyer. After that point, I was focused on working with computers. You remember 1995, right? The beginning of those beautiful days leading up to the dot com bust? Funny thing though, even after the bust, I still wanted to work with computers.

During school, I worked on an Army post and I was married for about a year and a half to a guy in the Army. I can say, with conviction, that the US Army does not give a hot damn about the families of it's soldiers. Despite the propaganda that they attempt to force on soldiers and their families (how many "Soldiers and Families First" posters did I frame?) they would rather all the soldiers be single.

I hate flying. Well not so much the flying part as the idea that the plane could fall out of the sky due to any one seemingly minuscule thing that can cause extremely bad things to happen. Yes, yes, my chances of being in a car accident are greater than my chances of being in a plane that crashes. However, my chances of living after said car accident are far greater than my chances of living after a plane crash.

Getting my job at Google was kind of a fluke. I was on Craigslist looking for something random (I'm always scouring for old computers and good deals) and decided to look at the jobs section. I saw Google was hiring in Atlanta and I said "Oooo cool," sent my resume in and here I am today.

I wasn't born in the United States and for a while I had dual citizenship with the country I was born in. I got rid of it when I had some issues with financial aid in college. What I mean by issues is "We don't think you're a citizen of the US, therefore you can't have financial aid." Silly, yes. However arguing with people in power who think they're right can take a long time, time I didn't have.

Welp there is my 5. I will now pass the torch on to...

Gayle
Darla
CJ
Liz
AG

BTW Amazon fixed their mess. I love that during this time of year, I can easily point people to my Amazon Wish List when they ask "What do you want for Christmas?" Thanks for that. I love that you surmised that maybe I'd like to beat people to the punch and showed them what I wanted before I even had to ask. RSS feeds of Wish Lists? Awesome, really. Then when I thought it couldn't get better, you created a Wish List widget that I could just stick in a web page. In Flash format, no less, so that I could put it on my MySpace page too. I almost wanted to marry you then, Amazon. I say almost because you're a tease. You go and wave your shiny widget in front of me, enticing me, then you laugh as I try to use it. I tried to talk to you about it. I wanted to make things work. You, however, tried to tell me that pretty little thing you were waving around wasn't yours.[1] So now, Amazon, I'm writing you this letter. I doubt it will get through to you but it's my last chance. I want us to get through this Amazon, I really do. For the record, the trip was largely unsuccessful. I suppose I'm used to newer cities with newer apartments. The shotgun apartments with "charm" (read: old appliances) and creaky floors just don't do it for me and the more modern apartments all cost a small fortune.

So prior to my starting this post, I was editing a picture from my cousins wedding in Photoshop. I'd like to print that photo and frame it myself, but alas, I've not found a place that will allow me to mat and frame a photo myself. I don't know if I've mentioned it in previous postings but I used to mat and frame art, prints, and photos kind of professionally while I was in school. I even taught matting and framing classes once a week. I enjoyed the work and it was actually relaxing. Unfortunately, the only place I can find online that allows people to mat and frame on their own stuff is in Berkeley, CA. While I love any excuse to go visit Cali, that's sort of a long trip to do matting and framing. Maybe, hopefully, there is a place in New York that allows people to frame their own stuff. FYI, a quick way to get art on your walls at home is to buy some picturesque and/or artistic calendars and mat and frame the pages. Also works well with those bargain coffee table books from Borders.

So today during my weekly pilgrimage to Whole Foods, I happened to see this cute little bottle with a mint leaf on it. Upon further inspection, the product inside the cute bottle was water. Not just another bottled water, mind you, mint flavored bottled water. I bought a bottle, tasted it, and now I'm hooked. It's called Metromint and its great. Also, no calories. Even better. If you like mint, go buy some.

Happy Turkey/$100 XBox 360 Day Everybody!

Site Update: Template change

I've changed my template for the time being since my old one wasn't compatible with Blogger in Beta. Remember that post I made about using your Google Personalized Homepage in your Firefox Sidebar? So it got Dugg, I got a lot of traffic to my site which eventually leveled off to the previous traffic levels. It's interesting to see a visual representation of the Digg effect (well to me anyhow) so I'm posting a screenshot of some Google Analytics stats. The spike in the top left graph is from the day that post got Dugg.

Crazy right?

Moving on, today I was on the elevator at work and one of the guys from PWC started talking to me about my job. He asked the regular questions, like what do you do, and I gave my standard answer "Type on computers all day." He then asked if we worked hard and I said yes, we work hard and we play hard. To this he says, "Oh I see you guys come in wearing jeans everyday and it seems like you're just chillin.'" Errrr, what?

This made me start thinking about dress codes and how people perceive those who aren't restricted by them. For example, because I wear jeans to work everyday, does that mean I don't work hard? I would think that people work better and harder when they are comfortable. Also, what purpose do dress codes serve anyhow? If you're amongst your peers, what is the point of "looking professional?" Shouldn't your work be able to show just how good you are at your job? Nah, that's too reasonable.

So when I went to San Diego, my cousin introduced me to a new addiction. I give you the Peppermint Mocha from Starbucks. Now since I'm going to be a New Yorker soon, I have a reason to brush up on my Starbucks lingo. Grande, non-fat, half-caf, no whip, please and thank you very much. Continuing on my becoming a New Yorker trend, I'm only drinking these coffees and eating celery. Just kidding, I don't think I can only exist on celery. Well not unless its inside tuna salad on some really good bread. Okay I'm hungry now, time to go find a snack. Later folks!

Post from the plane

So I'm flying right now and won't be posting this until I get home. No matter, I have one more hour before we're scheduled to land.

I'm returning from San Diego where my beautiful cousin GiGi got married to a wonderful guy. The wedding was gorgeous, despite a few snafus. For the record, if you're in the Southern California area planning a wedding, please don't book Clawson Photography. They're scam artists who use a fake sample book (with pics stolen from a good photographer) plus a low price to take your money. They either never show up for the wedding or do show up but never send the pictures. They tried to scam my cousin but luckily she did some research and was able to book a great photographer at the last minute. I don't know their names but once I find out, I'll update this post. The rehearsal dinner was iffy due to an issue at the Dave and Busters in San Diego. Apparently medical conditions do not override their policies on headwear inside the establishment unless the general manager gets involved. Really bad form in my opinion. Aside from that drama, all went well. Congrats Gi and JR!

On the tech tip, I've still been playing with the new thing mentioned in my previous post, also known as the Google Apps For Your Domain Start Page. I used to work at an educational institution and if I was still there, I'd set the Start Page as the homepage on all my Firefox deployments. That would be a great way to keep students up to date with current info. Anywho, with this addition to Google Apps For Your Domain and the fun new features added to Gmail (all hail the Murd...errr Mute function!), the Google fangirl in me has been cheering loudly lately. :)

In other news, my move to New York is fast approaching. I go to look for apartments next weekend and I move in early December. It's a little nervewracking but luckily its the only worry I have right now. I have some anxiety about not having a car anymore but I think I'll get over it in time. It's really hard figuring out which neighborhoods are the "good" neighborhoods and which are the not so good ones. I'm leaning towards parts of Brooklyn, Astoria, and Jersey City though I'll probably end up with something I wasn't even expecting. That just tends to be how things happen for me. :)

So I'm home now and just got the pop up to switch to new-ish Blogger beta. Sooo, here is my first post from new Blogger world. Now the costume I want is sold out everywhere. Ugh.

Christmas in New York is going to be fabulous! I can't wait to go ice skating again.

I played Second Life on the recommendation of a friend. I'd tried it once before last year but it was way to slow on my crappy laptop so I gave up on it. Now that I have a decent laptop, it's um...interesting.

Every so often I really notice my height. For example, after I get something out of the fridge, I stand up and look down at the top of the fridge and realize, damn I am pretty tall.

Firefox 2.0 looks very tasty, for lack of a better word.

I love my digital camera. No seriously, I've been taking more pictures than ever. I now have 5.45 GB of pictures I've taken since I got it. I'm not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing.

I'm really in love with tea right now. Particularly POM Tea because it comes in the cute reusable drinking glass container and Assam Black Honest Tea because it is just plain GOOD. If Assam Black Honest Tea came in the cute containers, I'm afraid I'd have to buy a pallet.

Daft Punk never fails to put me in a better mood. Like when I spill the aforementioned POM Tea all over my bed.

Eat like Sssssssnake

Sorry I keep posting videos but who else am I going to share them with? It was fun to send my mom the article as she is still giggly about where I work. When she saw the picture the first thing she says is "Wow it looks like you guys have toys at work....do you have toys?!" Cute.

Speaking of New York, I may move there pretty soon. I've been looking for apartments online and I'm already exhausted. Searching for apartments in New York is like searching for apartments on Mars. It's truly unlike anything I've ever done before and I don't recommend it to anybody. Thankfully, I've been using the updated Google Reader to kind of help with this a little. Currently I'm subscribed to feeds from Craigslist and Google Base (how come more apartment search sites don't have feeds?!) that are customized to the exact kind of apartment I'm looking for. See, I'm not one for going out somewhere to do my laundry. Call me spoiled but something about being able to toss a load in whenever I so desire works for me.

anyhow, I never used Google Reader before because I didn't like the interface. The most I did with it was had it power the RSS feeds on my blogs sidebar (Dugg and I Wish...). However with the new interface, it's actually usable! For the apartment hunt, I have a tag called apartment hunt (shock!). I've applied that tag to both the Craigslist and Base feeds and now I can keep an eye on apartments that fit into my criteria. By the way, if you know of more apartment hunting sites that have feeds, I'd appreciate if you left a comment with the link.

Back to Reader, while its got a nice new look and some cool features, there are still things that are missing. For example, it's not possible to search feeds. For example, if I wanted to find all the items with the word "Brooklyn" in the apartment hunt tag, I'd have to go back to the feed source and modify my search there. Not helpful at all. Also, unless I'm totally missing something, (someone correct me if I am) its not possible to create new tags without first applying them to individual items. The lack of auto-refreshing is annoying. I hate having to click refresh to see new items. However, aside from those 3 things, the new Reader is fab. Congrats to the folks who worked on it. :)

Okay so this post has gotten much longer than I planned for it to be so I'll save the rest of what I wanted to say for another day. Have a good weekend folks!
Tags:

apartment search

New York

Google

Reader

Cocaine really is a *helluva* drug

Can someone tell me why people want to put this in their bodies?

WTF of the Week..no the Decade: Bush Safe From War Crimes Prosecution

SEC. 106. Translation: Bush (and his administration) cannot be tried for anything they did to detainees after September 11, 2001. Wave bye bye to the Geneva Conventions, right out the window. Please, can we throw him out of office now? Do I need to send in a secret operative to seduce him so we can impeach him on moral grounds? That's the only thing that seems to work in this country.

Post worthy: Google notebook and Personalized homepage get updates

Awwww yay! Two of my flavorite Google products have been updated recently. I do believe that calls for a post, don't you?

So you may have noticed that there is a new tabbing feature on your Personalized Homepage. You may have also noticed that there are some new features in Notebook. If you haven't I'll give you a quick run down:

Sharing - Additional sharing options. Now, you can share your Google Notebook with a few friends and let them edit it alongside you.

Improved drag and drop - Easily rearrange your notes by dragging and dropping them from one section to another (or even from one notebook to another).

Trash and undo - Never lose your work. Now, when you delete a note, section or notebook, you can undo your action right away. You can also retrieve deletions from your Trash.

Google Notebook on your Google homepage - Access your notebooks on your Google homepage by adding the Google Notebook gadget.

Can you guess the newest feature most interesting to me?

If you guessed Notebook on the homepage you win the prize (not a real one yet, that's later on in the post). How I adore being able to access my notebooks from my sidebar. Mind you, I have 8 notebooks right now and many of them have information I use fairly regularly. Extra bonus with the tabs as now I can have a bit of organization to what I want to see in my sidebar. It's very nice to be able to put away my personal calendar and e-mail when I'm sharing my screen with someone.

I love that the Personalized Homepage and the sidebar are becoming more and more useful. With the Gadget awards going on, I'm looking forward to seeing some great new and useful Gadgets. The particular gadget I'm waiting on is one that will allow me to post to Blogger. I'll send a brand new Google shirt (black, long -sleeved) to whomever creates it. Seriously.

So what new Gadgets would you like to see? Which ones are the most useful to you now?

Tags:

Google

notebook

personalized homepage

Shoe shopping

Really brief post, I *promise* I'll make a real one soon. :) Anywho, thought I'd key in my loyal 43 readers to a sweet little deal at Timberland.com.

From now until September 17, enjoy 40% off Timberland gear AND free shipping when you use this promotional code when you checkout with Google Checkout: FFSEPTGGL

To start shopping, go to: http://www.timberland.com

Timberland is one of the many quality brands that have launched with Google Checkout running promotions.
